Structural Drawing: A Three Dimensional Approach
May 28th-30th; Cost: $360

This course has been designed for students of figure drawing and painting in order to improve their structural knowledge. Its main objective is to equate modeling in paint or graphite to modeling in clay. Structural Drawing will be taught in three parts: drawing from architectonic and organic forms in colored pencil, sculpting from the skull, and finally sculpting and drawing the human head. By sculpting, drawing and extrapolating concepts of inner figure, the use of structural analysis should enable the student to rapidly develop a tactile sense of the finish.

Portrait Drawing & Structure of the Head w/ Michael Grimaldi
July 18th-22nd; Cost: $600 - FULL - registration closed

This course will sequentially present the fundamental and advanced concepts necessary towards the successful realization of portrait drawings from direct observation. A thorough understanding of the visual experience and human structure is essential for anyone wishing to express and translate these elements to the picture plane. Separating the concepts, studying them independently, re-constructing and combining them with the other elements to create well unified and holistic portrait drawings, will foster the student's ability to perceive the visual experience with intelligence, apply this knowledge to their work, and cultivate an ability to problem-solve and self-correct.

During this intensive, five-day workshop students will explore the elements of proportion, gesture, perspective, movement, constructive anatomy and morphology, light on form, value construction and composition through sustained investigations of the human head. The morning session will be devoted to lecture demonstrations and the afternoon session, to individual critiques of the student’s drawings of the model.

Exploring the Process of Portrait Painting w/ Amaya Gurpide and Jordan Sokol
August 22nd-26th; Cost: $600

In this collaborative workshop, painters Jordan Sokol and Amaya Gurpide will guide students through a methodical exploration of the painted portrait. Demonstrations and individualized critiques will present students with a structured thought process for translating the fundamentals of visual perception into an accurate and realistic representation of the human head. The class will focus on one portrait, giving students the opportunity to experience the various stages of the painting process and offering them the opportunity to develop a more completed painting.

Students will be lead through basic and advanced concepts of head construction, anatomy, form and its relationship to light, the optical impression, as well as color theory. The class will also include an insightful introduction to several Spanish and Italian painters up to the 19th century.

This is a unique opportunity to work with two painters, visiting from Europe, and bringing together their distinct methods of working into a unified approach to painting the portrait.
